Expertise

Brenda M. Michelson is a Contributing Architect to the Patricia Seybold Group.

Michelson is both a strategist and a hands-on practitioner, specializing in IT architecture, business solution planning, and IT transformation. Michelson demonstrates her holistic, yet pragmatic, approach to IT architecture with her Business-Driven ArchitectureSM (BDA) philosophy. Michelson based BDA on the simple premise that architecture is not an end goal in itself, but rather a means for the development and delivery of agile and sustainable IT business solutions. Business-Driven ArchitectureSM spans architecture definition, consumption, and execution.

In addition to her ongoing work with BDA, Michelson contributes to both research and consulting at the Patricia Seybold Group on service-oriented architecture (SOA). Of particular note is Michelson's creation and field-testing of the Service Discovery Methodology.

Michelson honed her extensive IT knowledge during 19 years of corporate IT experience, beginning with hands-on development roles and progressing through the ranks (and across technology paradigms) to senior IT leadership.

Most recently, Michelson was Chief Enterprise Architect for L.L. Bean, a well-known multichannel retailer. At L.L. Bean, after founding the enterprise architecture practice, Michelson was responsible for the articulation and execution of the enterprise architecture strategy, which included transforming the shop to J2EE and delivering the foundation architectures: service-oriented architecture, enterprise integration architecture, and event-driven architecture.

In addition to architecture, Michelson was responsible for guiding, delivering, and managing portions of L.L. Bean's application, information, and infrastructure portfolios. Michelson's domain expertise includes order capture and fulfillment, customer service, commerce, point of sale, merchandising, marketing, inventory management, and back-office operations. Finally, as a senior IT leader, Michelson played a key role in strategic and annual planning and talent development.

Background

Earlier in her career, over the course of a decade, Michelson provided development services—programming, design, systems analysis, database administration, and project leadership—for companies in insurance, banking, chip manufacturing, and aircraft engine design.

Education

Michelson holds a B.S. from Bryant College, from which she graduated summa cum laude.
